About Me

About me. Hmmm…. I thought I was going to be a missionary. A few things have happened since then.
I’ve ended up working in a homeless shelter in Edmonton for the last 5ish years. I currently oversee a housing program and oscillate between determination to serve our clients and do my job well, and despair at the state of the world, my work ethic and ability, and the inefficiencies of agencies, programs, and initiatives to actually change lives for the better.

My personal life is significantly more upbeat at this point. My beautiful and intelligent wife has just given birth to a healthy baby boy, and we are currently adapting to the instant and thoroughly pervasive changes of having another human life completely dependent on us. Aside from the sleep deprivation it’s a lot of fun.

I read quite a bit. I am interested in ideas, but am more interested in experiences. My writing is a feeble attempt to contribute to the vast ocean of these shared stories and experiences put forth by the many brilliant and thoughtful authors & writers through the ages who have somehow found the insight to show us what is true; to say what we feel. For all I have received from them I feel the desire to at least try to give something back.

  1. Hey Ryan, thanks for this great blog. My pastor quoted your poem tonight, the one about us being trees. Moved me. I’d like to post it on my blog if it’s ok (of course I’d credit you and link to your blog). Shalom, The Broken Pastor (thebrokenpastor.com)
